Self-Guided Tours for $1 per day!
Craig in the Bad Lands

Back in 2011, Craig Ripley started his YouTube Channel, "Living Off the Slab" to document a cross country trip from Boston, MA to Prescott, AZ and back. By the time he returned, Craig found he had developed a small following of enthusiastic viewers which continues growing to this day.

Living Off the Slab is Craig’s way of saying, "get off the highway and find the roads less traveled. Seek out the path filled with twists and turns, for they are the most interesting."

Off the Slab Tours is an extension of this philosophy where Craig shares his passion for finding and riding the beautiful backroads of the United States and North America. Not only do we ride great twisted roads, we suggest a variety of inns and hotels that epitomize the local flavor of the regions we are traveling.

Alaska Self-Guided Tour

With our Self-Guided Tours, you get all of the GPX files that Craig used to complete the route, along with a day by day route plan that includes lodging options and a few helpful hints. The day by day route sheet comes in the form of a an easy to understand Excel Spreadsheet which can be printed out and brought with you on the trip.

You might even find a few extras like a basic budget and packling list. In the case of our Alaska Trip and Craig's 60/60 Ride, both trips were documented on Craig' YouTube Channel, provided even more information to make your trip a special one.

Ride the same great roads that Craig chose for his adventures. Each tour includes GPS files and a written itinerary.

Each tour contains the actual GPX files used when Craig rode the route. Before leaving for your trip, please make sure the GPX files can be read by your routing software and device. They were created using MyRouteApp.com and have been run and tested using a Garmin GPS device (390LM or Zumo XT), however it is not possible to account for all possible variations.

Off the Slab Tours and Off the Slab, LLC makes no warranty or guarantee that these files or the routes they represent will work on your specific device and that the roads chosen are best for your riding style and abilities. The sport of motorcycling comes with inherent dangers and you should use all due diligence to review and research the routes prior to embarking on your tour as road conditions can change for a multitude of reasons, including but not limited to weather and construction schedules.

Packaged with the GPX files is a spreadsheet which includes a day by day itinerary, sample packing list and budget. These items are provided as guidance and not intended to be followed to the letter. You should modify each of these items to fit your individual riding style, preferences, physical or medical needs as well as your level of experience. Make the ride your own and make the decisions that are right for you!

If you have questions, I will be happy to answer them.

Boston to Alaska

Making the pilgrimage

In 2017, Craig and two friends (Peter and Steven) decided it was time to take the pilgrimage to Alaska. After dreaming and planning it looked like the total mileage was going to be just shy of 12,000 and the time necessary would be in the neighborhood of 5 weeks. Unfortunately, Peter and Steven could not get that much time off of work, so Craig would travel the first week alone meeting up with the guys in Boise Idaho.

From Boise the three friends rode together for three weeks before Peter and Steven had to ship their bikes home and board a plane. Craig would again finish off the trip alone for the final week. On the way home, Craig would visit a couple of places he had always wanted to see, Bad Lands National Park and Bear Tooth Pass.

This ride can be completed on any kind of motorcycle, but an adventure bike is probably the best suited. Many rides make the trip on their Harleys or Goldwings and just have to slow down on the unpaved sections. The Alaska Highway is paved all the way up; however, you will run into long sections that are under construction, which means dirt and/or gravel. If you decide to do the Top of the World Highway, it is not paved, but it is well maintained and easily passably when dry.

Amazing parks and attractions:

  • Ice Fields Parkway, Alberta, and BC
  • Alaska Highway
  • White Horse Yukon
  • Watson Lake Yukon
  • Dawson City Yukon
  • Top of the Work Highway
  • Fairbanks Alaska
  • Anchorage Alaska
  • Stewart Cassiar Highway
  • Bad Lands National Park
  • Bear Tooth Pass

Nova Scotia

Ride the Bay of Fundy and the Amazing Cabot Trail

In 2012, Craig his wife Cathy and two friends (Wayne and Ginger) were looking for a follow-up trip to their 2011 ride to Arizona and Sturgis. This time they decided to head north and visit the beautiful and friendly island Province of Nova Scotia Canada.

Being that no ferries were running at the time, the two couples jumped on the bikes and rode from Boston Massachusetts, across the Canadian border and into Nova Scotia. The entire trip took 14 days and was highlighted by the beautiful scenery, a ride on the tidal bore and of course, the amazingly friendly inhabitants of Nova Scotia.

The GPX files for this trip include several options. You can ride all the way, as we did in 2012 or you can take a ferry from Bar Harbor Maine or Saint John New Brunswick. Routes are included for each of these options, you pick and choose the mileage and things you want to see.

MID ATLANTIC

Skyline Drive and The Blue Ridge Parkway

Take the leisurely and beautiful ride on Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway

One of the great rides in the Mid-Atlantic Region, is to take the leisurely ride from Front Royal Virginia, down Skyline Dive, through Shenandoah National Park and continuing down the Blue Ridge Parkway to Cherokee North Carolina.

Skyline Drive and the Parkway is a beautiful ride, however, be warned that the average speed limit is 45 miles per hour, and you will get ticketed if you push the limit too far. This trip is one to be savored and enjoyed, not sped through.

It is also common that rain and severe thunderstorms can occur on the parkway each day. I have personally run into lightning storms and hail. Go prepared.

Since this route goes near the infamous Tail of the Dragon, I have thrown in two additional GPX files navigating the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway.

Great roads included in this trip:

  • Skyline Drive
  • Blue Ridge Parkway
  • Tail of the Dragon
  • Cherohala Skyway

Self Guided Tours | The Big New England Loop

The Big New England Loop

Ride along tree lined back roads, through quaint New England Towns and Green Mountain passes.

When people think of the Northeast, they typically do not envision great places to ride motorcycles, but they would be wrong. The Northeast and New England may not have the "big skies" of the Western United States, but it is traversed by twisty tree lined back roads that join small communities and rural farms. You will be surprised by just how much green there is in New England.

This 10-day tour takes you from Foxboro, MA through all six New England states.

New England is known for its changing weather, so depending on the time of year you are riding, be prepared for extreme temperature and weather shifts. In early Summer for example, you might find the 70's one day and then the 40's or 50's the next. When every you ride in New England, be prepared for anything and bring your rain gear.

Great roads included in this trip:

  • CT 169
  • MA 116
  • MA and VT 8A
  • VT 100
  • NH 118
  • The Kancamagus Highway
  • Bear Notch Road
  • ME 16

Amazing parks and attractions:

  • Burlington Vermont
  • Grand Isle
  • Rangeley Maine
  • Acadia National Park
  • Bar Harbor Maine
  • York Maine
  • Great Food!
